One wine recommended to us while in Provence was the 2012 Cassis from Clos Ste. Magdeleine. Slightly richer and weightier, the wine was a blend of Marsanne, Ugni Blanc, Clairette, and Bourboulenc hailing from the town Cassis appellation, just south of St. Remy on the Mediterranean sea.
My experience with some of these grapes in the past has yielded floral and overly fruity wines, but the Mediterranean climate and backbone of Ugni Blanc certainly balances this wine with a nice acidity. Both the nose and palette were rich with stone fruit, like biting into a juicy peach, but not in an overly cloying or sweet way, a nice touch of honey on the finish.
This wine traveled with us on the next part of our journey; we enjoyed the last sips of Provence from our room in Cucugnan in southwestern France; more from our time there to come!
