As a special birthday treat my dad sent me a bottle of Krug Grande Cuvee Champagne. I gathered the girls prior to my birthday dinner at Jeffrey’s Grocery for some tasty apps and bubbles to get the party started!
Perfect tiny bubbles! |
As a rule I tend to avoid sparkling wine, it usually gives me a headache and I can only drink a glass or two when feeling particularly festive, but this was different. Light, crisp, refreshing, and bone-dry, it was delicious; with no hints of the overly sweet or sugary taste I often find with your every-day prosecco. The taste was bursting with citrus, lemon and grapefruit as well as fresh green apple.
What’s really cool is you can visit the Krug website and type in your “Krug ID”. Each bottle has a particular ID number that tells you the story of your particular bottle. This particular Cuvee was a blend of 134 different wines from 12 different vintages ranging from 1990-2005, it’s amazing the amount of care and craft that goes into this wine, but it shows! My dad’s favorite word to use is “elegant” and I think that sums up Krug perfectly.
We paired the champagne with two cheeses from Murray’s – a cow’s milk quadrello di’ bufallo and a goat’s milk chevre. The richness from the fat in the cheese paired perfectly with the bright, crisp bubbles. I threw in some dried figs and strawberries to round out the pairing.
The perfect start to the night – more birthday weekend updates to come!
